Director of Music (Part-Time) Job Description

The Director of Music will provide leadership for the music programs of Trinity Episcopal Church, Collinsville, CT under the direction of and collaboration with the rector and other worship leaders.
Music is integral to the life and ministry of Trinity and represents one of our core strengths. We have the Charles Fisk OPUS 56 (1971) tracker-action pipe organ and two Baldwin upright pianos. We seek a Director of Music who is comfortable playing the music of our Episcopal/Anglican tradition while exploring new expressions of music and participation.

An ideal candidate would be (1) an excellent choral conductor with a proven ability to work well with a talented, all volunteer, adult choir that sings four-part music, (2) a skilled musician on both organ and piano, and (3) comfortable playing a wide repertoire of sacred and inspirational music.  Also, he or she will be open to recruiting singers for the adult choir, provide support for the Saturday night praise and worship service, be willing to work with us to build a youth choir, and provide support for occasional musical performances by the children.

Trinity Episcopal Church is located at 55 River Road, Collinsville, CT.

Duties and Responsibilities:
This is a part time position, requiring an average of 12 hours per week, including, but not limited to:

1. Play the organ and piano for regular and special worship services, including practice and preparation.

2. Prepare the adult choir at a 9:15 pre-worship rehearsal on Sundays and at a one-hour weekly rehearsal, currently held following the Sunday morning worship service.  The choir sings from early September through mid-June.

3. Improve the quality of the choir's singing ability through warm-up exercises, diction and breath control exercises.

4. Expand the variety of hymns and service music.  This may require teaching the music to the congregation.

5. Plan weekly music in collaboration with the rector and staff, supporting the liturgy and scriptures of the day, and capitalizing on available talents, both vocal and instrumental.

6. Provide timely and accurate music related information and materials for production of service bulletins.

7. Meet monthly with the Rector and the Worship Committee.

8. Maintain timely communication with the staff and choir to manage schedules and updates. 

9. Provide music for weddings and funerals, as needed.  Compensation for these events is additional and according to AGO guidelines.

10. Secure a substitute, if needed, for any pre-planned time away from the church.

11. Oversee the maintenance of the church organ and pianos. 

12. Maintain and expand the music library adhering to current copyright laws. Assistance will be provided by the volunteer Choir Librarian.

13. The Director of Music and the choir have a shared responsibility for being dependable, prompt, and prepared for all rehearsals and worship services.

 

Term of Position/Weekly Hours: This is a 12-month position, 12 hrs/week, plus time for additional activities as agreed.  Paid vacation is negotiable.

Compensation: Within the current guidelines of the American Guild of Organists

Note: Pursuant to Episcopal Church in Connecticut’s policy, the selected candidate will undergo a background check.  Any offer of employment is contingent upon satisfactory completion of such background check.  An additional expectation is that the Director of Music will complete Safe Church Training.
